Reflection Estimator

Given the density of a surface against which sound will reflect, this calculator will estimate the percentage of the sound wave that will be reflected back. Keep in mind, this does not account for all the real-life factors affecting sound wave reflection, and is meant to show you a "simplified" approach to calculating reflection intensity.

Impedance Calculation

\( Z = \rho \times c \)
kg/m3

Drywall: 668 kg/m3
Brick: 2000 kg/m3
Glass: 2500 kg/m3
Absorption Products: 30-100 kg/m3

Surface Impedance (Z1): rayls
Air at Room Temp Impedance (Z2): 415 rayls

Impedance Mismatch

\( \Delta Z = |Z_2 - Z_1| \)
Impedance Mismatch (ΔZ):

Reflection Coefficient

\( R = \frac{Z_2 - Z_1}{Z_2 + Z_1} \)
Reflection Coefficient (R):

Intensity Reflection

\( RI = R^2 \)
Intensity Reflection (RI):

Percentage of Sound Wave Reflection

\( \text{Reflection} = RI \times 100 \) %
